Research carried out by Brazilian researchers since the beginning of the 20th century has been essential for the development of Brazilian viticulture. All this effort allows us to produce quality grapes, from Rio Grande do Sul to Pernambuco, in a sustainable, productive and quality way.
Through cultivation processes adapted to the climate and soil characteristic of the cultivation region, highlighting different forms of production and originality of products, the Geographical Indication (GI) certification has been achieved in different regions of Brazil.
In Brazil, the GI has 2 distinct classifications: Indication of Provenance (IP) and Denomination of Origin (DO), representing an important advance for regional economic development, such as:
Qualitative enhancement of the products sold in order to preserve its characteristics and typicality, establishing the heritage of each region of the country;
Boost investments in technological improvements in the wine sector and agrobusiness;
Stimulate wine tourism in the regions, as well as add legal mechanisms against fraud and usurpation, and the misuse use of the Geographical Indication.
Since 1990, EMBRAPA Grape and Wine, together with researchers, has been a pioneer in the dissemination, incentive and technical-scientific support to wine producers regarding the structuring to obtain GI registration, endorsed by the National Institute of Industrial Property - INPI, based on the Brazilian Industrial Property Law and other regulations.

Currently, in addition to Vale dos Vinhedos (RS), the following wine GIs are registered with INPI:
IP Pinto Bandeira
IP Altos Montes
IP Monte Belo
IP Farroupilha
IP Vales de Uva Goethe
IP Campanha Gaúcha
IP High Altitude Wine in Santa Catarina (SC)

In 2022, the São Francisco Valley achieved the Indication of Provenance for fine and noble wines, as well as for sparkling natural wine and muscatel. The production, aging and bottling of the wines take place within the delimited geographical area by the IP Vale do São Francisco.
